The Moon, a heavenly celestial body is the only natural satellite of the Earth. It approximate radius is 1,738 km. it is the heavenly body which while revolving the Sun also goes around the Earth too at he same time. It rotates Earth at an appropriate distance of 3,84,403 km. in each period of 29.5 days, Moon makes a full rotation around the Earth. It has no its own light it brightens only in the presence of the light of the Sun. 1959 A.D. is marked as an official date from which began the scientific exploration of Moon. The Moon posses very different and especial value to the Earth because I is the only nearest heavenly body and has different religious values attached to it. 1969 was the historic date in which Moon received the first human foot print on its surface.
Geographically Moon is the 5th largest satellite in this solar system which is also the only natural satellite of Earth. Its total surface area is quiet small in terms of the Earth that is only about a tenth of the Earth’s total area. It is believed to be burned at about 4.4 billions years, about half billions years later of the formation of Earth because of the giant impact. Scientists have classified the internal structure of the Moon into three layers – crust, mantle and core. The major constituent elements of Moon’s crust are oxygen, silicon, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, and iron. Crust is believed to be about 50 kilometers thick. Iron, Titanium, Orthopyroxene, Clinopyroxene are few major dominant minerals of the mantle of the Moon where as iron ores and Sulfur and Nickel are few dominant constituent elements of the core of the Moon.
Moon’s atmosphere is found t be composed of Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon-dioxide and Carbon-monoxide, Argon, Helium. Its atmosphere is much thin, almost negligible in comparison to the Earth’s with a total atmosphere mass of less than 104 kg. major sources of its atmosphere are out gassing, sputtering i.e. bombardment of different small and micro-meteorites, electrons, solar wind and ions.
